Priyanka is no Indira

In the sensation created by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s atlast  entry into active politics it’s been said that  with all her other qualities she is also like her grandmother, Indira Gandhi. She is charismatic, has good command over Hindi and can easily create a rapport with the public. Some of the qualities her elder sibling hasn’t acquired yet. And yes she looks so much like her dadi, Indira Gandhi. So are we seeing the entry of Indira Gandhi 2 ?

No Priyanka with all her likeness to her grandmother is no Indira Gandhi. She cannot be as circumstances are different. Indira was a child of the freedom struggle also  the daughter of Jawahar Lal Nehru. Her world view was shaped by the events she witnessed in her childhood. Priyanka does not have this advantage. She is of course witness to two tragedies in the family but has led a very sheltered life. Her husband Robert Vadra is also a liability. But the bigger problem is that the present Congress party is only a reflection of what it was during Indira Gandhi time. It is being run by the mother , the son and now the daughter. The so called High Command is now limited to these three people. There is no internal democracy thus the party has lost its inner strength hence the struggle and hence calling the daughter out to help the son.

Priyanka also has no proven record as a vote catcher. Her achievements as in charge of family pocket boroughs Rae Bareli and Amethi has been mixed. In UP assembly elections Congress could win only 4 out of the 10 segments in these two constituencies. She has now been put as in charge of eastern UP which has Narendra Modi’s Varanasi and Yogi Adityanath’s Gorakhpur. The main fight in UP is between the BSP-SP alliance and the BJP. Congress is a bit player in the biggest state of the country. Priyanka thus faces a daunting task so let’s wait and not declare the movie hit even before it  is released.
